   My first thermaling!

Hey you guys,

This afternoon I went flying. I had two of my best flights so far. The picture you see here is me looking down on the takeoff site from my glider after I'd climbed a little!!!! I caught a thermal, ALL ON MY OWN, and climbed it. Actually, I caught lift on the mountain ridge below first, and then followed that up to a decent thermal. the brownish tan area is the takeoff site, the little dot next to it is a truck and there are two gliders below me. You can see it was a pretty good climb. I’m about 460 meters above the landing site.

Catching a thermal is a big deal, especially since I’ve only had 20 flights and don't have any instruments to tell me if I’m going up or down. I do it all by feel. My instructor is really impressed with my progress.

It is a rush, I can tell you that. Thermals are turbulent and I get tossed around in them a lot! I have a ton of ground handling experience, which is really paying off now because I can tell where the glider is and what to do to keep it overhead. Plus, as long as I’m high, I don't worry about it. It’s like being on a roller coaster. It’s one hell of a ride, but you know you're safe. If I get in trouble, and I have height, all I need to do is let the glider re-inflate on its own. I had some pretty rough air up there today and my harness dropped out from under me for a split second. I love that feeling of weightlessness! I will admit it was a little disconcerting when it happened though. But, nice that I knew what to do instinctively from all the ground handling.

oh, and one more picture to give you some perspective of the ground. There are two gliders below me, level with the takeoff area, below that is the landing area. In the bottom left corner of the picture is the ground. That’s a river you see winding thru the edge of the picture. There is a skewed “T” made by the roads, at the end of the “T” is the school building. It doesn't feel this high when you're up there, it is so cool though, you can see for miles. and it's beautiful... peaceful, quiet, relaxing... nothing but the wind thru your helmet and I had a hawk thermaling below me today too. Total time flying was 1 hour 40 minutes, all on my own. Oh, and I’m doing all my own landings now too. I landed in the 3 square meter target landing today as well!!! it was a great day flying!!! love you all-  John
